Nature Adventures in Troncones: So Much to See and Do!

Can you imagine a day filled with the sounds of multi-colored tropical birds, or baby turtles hatching and scurrying across the beach to the sea, or dolphins skipping over the waves?

At Villa Milagro, these are just a few of the many ecotourism activities in and around our location here in Troncones. We’re Launch Central for all kinds of local adventures awaiting you and your family just minutes from our front door.

Here are just a few of them:

Bird Sanctuaries: Flying Symphonies of Color
If you enjoy birdwatching, you’ll love the local bird sanctuaries so popular with visitors to the Troncones area. The large number of species include elegant herons, pelicans, brilliantly colored parrots and more.

As a guest at the Villa, you’ll be a short 30-minute drive from Aztlan Park Ecological Reserve at Iztapa and its 320 species of tropical birds.

Another great bird sanctuary (among several in the area) is the Barra de Potosí Lagoon an hour’s drive away. Walk the peaceful path along the mangrove-lined lagoon while watching multiple species of birds diving for fish, darting in and out of the lush foliage, and singing melodically in the trees.

Iguanas: Sunbathing Dinosaurs!
Iguanas are a fascinating species to watch, and we have many of them near the Villa. These direct descendants of the dinosaurs can be seen lounging in trees and on rocks, soaking in the rays. They’re typically harmless, even shy, and visitors love seeing them scurry in and out of the local foliage.

It’s almost like getting a glimpse into the world of dinosaurs themselves.

You’ll love how they seem to be everywhere. Step out onto your patio in the morning, and more often than not, you’ll soon spot one or several nearby, basking in the warm tropical sun. Watching these strange but lovely creatures up close, with their glistening green scales, gives you a memorable connection to now-distinct creatures of long ago.

Iguanas, you’ll find, play a key role in our local ecosystem. They help control our diverse insect population and spread seeds from the fruit they eat, keeping the local flora both healthy and growing.

How large can they grow? Some grow to six feet, including their long tails, but most are smaller than that. You may be surprised at how agile they are in the water one moment, and scrambling up a tree the next.

Keep your camera handy and you’ll have a wealth of fantastic photo opportunities of these wild and beautiful local residents. Their unique skin textures and striking poses make them the perfect models—and they don’t mind you snapping their pictures one bit!

Turtles: Race to the Sea
Did you know that the beaches around Troncones are known as one of the world’s most important nesting sites for sea turtles. Every year, Villa Milagro guests time their family vacations to coincide with the heartwarming sight of baby turtles hatching and scrambling over the beach to the sea.

The peak season for turtle hatching is July through February, with around 80,000 eggs being laid during that time period. It’s estimated that around 85% of these hatch successfully.

Local conservation groups offer turtle release programs in which you can actually help guide these precious little hatchlings to the water. Imagine how memorable an event this could be for you and your family. If interested, contact us for timing and details.

Dolphins: Show Offs of the Sea
One of the most popular activities our guests engage in is dolphin watching. Be sure to save some time for this on your trip to the Villa.

If you’ve never witnessed these playful creatures jumping, spinning and riding the waves, you’re in for a treat. Best time of the day is early morning, so set your alarm and grab your camera.

Imagine, as the sun peeks up over the horizon, you’re in a boat gliding through the calm water. Suddenly, you’re surrounded by a leaping, spinning pod of dolphins. Their acrobatic spins and flips are mesmerizing—are they also choreographed? They swim nearby, seeming to delight in their closeness to humans and putting on a show.

You’ll delight at how playful these intelligent creatures are and how important they are to the marine ecosystem.

Incidentally, the best tours are located just a few minutes from the Villa’s front door. They offer comfortable boats, deep knowledge of the area, and plenty of onboard refreshments to ensure your experience is as enjoyable as possible.

The dolphins are ready to put on a show – are you ready to be amazed?
