The Jewish People in Mexico
Although our beach community is not home to any synagogues, it’s the perfect place to study Jewish history. The history of the Jewish people in Mexico began in 1519, and Mexico now has a thriving Jewish community with a population estimated to be between 40,000 and 50,000, making it the 14th largest in the world
It begins with Sephardic Jews who fled the Spanish Inquisition in the 16th century. Known as Conversos, this small group of Jews kept their traditions alive in secret, passing their unique culture down through each generation for over 500 years.
By the middle of the 16th century, some historians say there were more Conversos in Mexico City than Spanish Catholics. The persecutions of the Inquisition continued to play a role in the development of the country all the way up until the 19th century.
With the arrival of Ashkenazi Jews from Eastern Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries, the Jewish population grew even more vibrant, and the number of synagogues and cultural centers increased considerably.
Mexico’s Jewish connection is not just in the nation’s past; it’s in its blood.
Your visit to the Villa is a great opportunity to honor the legacy of the Jewish faith in Mexico and to teach your family a living lesson about the resilience of the Jewish people.
What Might Your Hannukah Trip Look Like?
Your Villa Milagro experience begins with peaceful mornings. Perhaps you choose to sip coffee quietly by the pool, as the sun rises and your family stirs.
Breakfast is served, and it sets the pace for the day. You share blessings or prayers against a background of soft tropical sounds and beautiful tropical vistas, and then you plan your day.
There’s so much to do, both at the Villa and in nearby Troncones and other communities. Shopping, exploring, relaxing. It’s a laid-back time when you forget the business of the world, and simply enjoy family.
Later, you may explore the nearby shoreline or head down to the local artisan market in Troncones. Share the excitement of the kids at play, revisit old family tales, linger, laugh.
You’re together, and that’s what counts.
In the evening, the main event is the main event. Dinner could include your favorite Hanukkah dishes (like those fried latkes we mentioned) all in the bright Mexican moonlight—historic and so good!.
