Have you ever known a drink that seems to immerse you into another culture? Visitors to the Villa
Milagro, deep within the famed mezcal production region in and around Troncones, experience that
every day.
Mezcal is interwoven into our lives here, and it captures the hearts of locals and visitors alike.
Not familiar with mezcal? It’s a category of spirits made from the agave plant. One of the more familiar
mezcal drinks is tequila. Mezcal is the category that includes as many as 40 different agave varieties, and tequila, for example, is a subset made from Blue Weber agave.
In this part of the world, artisanal mezcal is much more than a drink; the process of making mezcal has been passed down through the generations, supporting the local economy and playing a key role in social gatherings, celebrations and community events.
When you relax with a glass of mezcal served neat at a charming seaside cantina in or around nearby Troncones, you’re experiencing firsthand the smoky, sweet, spicy or herbal tastes that have drawn visitors here from around the world.
Mezcal flavors range from bold to subtle, making it a spirit that invites you to explore and enjoy its many
diversities. What better way to spend a memorable day or evening than dropping into one of these colorful, authentic Mexican cuisine restaurants and tasting their wide selection of local mezcal brands.
It’s just one more good reason to plan your trip to the Villa this season!
You’ll find that many of the restaurants in the Troncones area, as well as those in nearby Zihuatanejo, Ixtapa, Petatlan and other easily accessible communities all have their own mezcal tasting menus.
Restaurants like Mi Jardín in Troncones, Mezcaleria Xochitl in Ixtapa, El Rey de Guerrero in Petatlan and La Providencia in Zihuatanejo are just a few of the recommended spots you’ll want to check out. Some of these locations also offer tours of their production areas, some are local, and some are a short car ride away.
Part of the fun is discovering them on your own. But if you need help, we’re always here to make suggestions.
One of the many benefits of the Villa Milagro is our centralized location. We’re close to everything in
the Troncones area, including all the best mezcal distilleries. So in addition to the many amenities at
the Villa (fine dining, luxury rooms, yoga, infinity pool, horseback riding, oceanside strolls and much
more), your proximity to so many great distilleries is just frosting on the cake!
One fascinating detail about the mezcal production process is that it’s completely artisanal—meaning that it’s all hand made. Machines are rarely used except in larger commercial operations. The agave is cooked with fire and wood, pressed (often by a mule-driven tools called a tahona) and naturally fermented.
Our guests tell us their mezcal adventures were among the highlights of their visit. They enjoyed meeting local residents, experiencing their culture and best of all, exploring the wildly delicious tastes their best mezcal!
What’s the best time of the year to schedule your own mezcal tasting excursion? Just about any time works, since the distilleries operate year-round. Some would recommend the dry season that runs from November through April and we tend to agree with that.
Not only is that period our most pleasant weather, with warm sunny days perfect for outdoor activities like visiting distilleries, but it is also peak harvest season. Visiting during that time period ensures you get to see the whole process, from harvest through production.
It’s also when many of the popular local festivals and events take place. So you can have your
memory-making exploration of mezcal along with your immersion into traditional Mexican culture.
But remember, visitors from all over are also fascinated with mezcal. Whether you’re planning to
visit for the incredible natural beauty of both the Villa Milagro and the surrounding countryside, or
simply to savor the acclaimed flavors of the local mezcal, don’t delay.
Reserve your stay at the Villa now and prepare for a tasty, delectable foray into all the things that can make your Mexican holiday so unforgettable.
