Bucket List Alert: Mexican Independence Day is Coming!

Looking for a spectacular way to celebrate the culture of Old Mexico? There’s nothing better than Dia de La Independencia in Zihuatanejo, just a few minutes from the Villa Milagro’s front door!

Visitors come from all over to enjoy the event’s colorful, exciting parades, traditional food, and fun, infectious spirit. This is the magic of Mexico in all its glory, and you’re invited!

Mexican Charm and Culture in Full Display
During Dia de La Independence, celebrated on September 16, Zihautanejo (Zihau for short!) comes alive with both anticipation and excitement. It all begins the night before with El Grito de Dolores! as crowds of locals and visitors gather under the festive lights and colorful decorations.

As soon as the local government official steps out onto a balcony and shouts “El Grito!”, the party begins.

In Zihau, that kicks off a not-to-be-missed parade of locals, including kids dressed up as revolutionary characters, coordinated drum and bugle groups, and dancers in their graceful, flowing “china problana” gowns and silver-adorned charro suits.

In past years we’ve seen teenagers building human pyramids (and trying not to fall!), plus other brave souls summersaulting through hoops of fire.

It’s loud, it’s patriotic, it’s visually captivating, and the celebration goes on into the night. Seriously, you cannot miss this.

Colorful Parades—Culture on Wheels
The feedback we get from our Villa guests lists the parades as their favorite part of the celebration. The beautifully decorated floats, elaborate costumes, loud high school bands and dancing participants are testaments to the long-treasured traditions of the Mexican people.

There’s no better way to enjoy your visit to Mexico than by experiencing their number one day of celebration in person…just minutes from your accommodations as the luxurious Villa Milagro.

Bring Your Appetite
As you’d expect on a major Mexican Holiday, the food on Dia de La Independencia (and the night before) is a paradise of taste and diversity. Street vendors are everywhere—with mouthwatering dishes that will stimulate your appetite and treat your tastebuds. Choose from a wide list of offerings including savory tacos and tamales, sweet churros and refreshing elote.

Our personal favorite: pozole, a hearty soup of hominy, meat and chiles—definitely Mexican and definitely delicious!

Bring Your Dancing Shoes
Music and dancing are at the very heart of Dia de La Independencia—so be prepared not just to enjoy, but even to participate if you’re so brave! The town of Zihua will be awash with roving mariachi bands, talented folk musicians and contemporary performers.

You’ll love the captivating rhythms of the salsa, the allure of cumbia (“the working people’s music”) and the traditional Mexican songs that invite you to join in (especially as the evening celebration and drinking songs progress!).

Fireworks That Light Up the Skies
What’s a celebration without fireworks, right? The massive fireworks during the evening are vivid reminders of Mexican tradition and freedom, and you and your family will love the bright colors and lights that cast a memorable glow over the town and its celebrants.

Imagine your excitement as the Zihua sky darkens and anticipation builds. Suddenly the first explosion of the evening illuminates the sky in a dazzling display of red, blue, white and green. Each blast is larger and more spectacular than the last, and the crowd sends up roars of approval with each.

These are memories that will last a lifetime.
