When you first visit Villa Milagro with all its luxury and amenities, one of the most exciting discoveries you’ll make is our proximity to the rich culture and natural beauty just down the road from us in nearby communities.
For many of our guests, that means just one thing: day trips!
Hop in the car and, just a short distance from the Villa, you’ll find some of Mexico’s most interesting and inviting communities with a wide array of fun adventures for your whole family.
Among the communities we recommend are Ixtapa, Zihuatanejo, and if you don’t mind a bit longer excursion, Patzcuaro.
Beautiful Sun-Filled Ixtapa: Water, Golfing, Tennis and Horse Riding!
Our first get-away is the nearby beach community of Ixtapa, the perfect day trip for beach lovers and fun seekers. Great tans are born on beaches like you’ll find at Ixtapa.
Our guests often tell us they found some of the area’s best snorkeling and scuba diving spots in Ixtapa, along with all kinds of water, tennis, golf and horse-riding on the beach.
Ixtapa is a bit of a party town, with magnificent beaches, local cuisine restaurants and quaint shops filled with both treasures and souvenirs just waiting for you to find them.
Incidentally, if you love wildlife, be sure to visit Ixtapa Island while you’re here. It’s a remarkable nature preserve filled with exotic birds, iguanas and even crocodiles. Or, if you prefer, take your family on a leisurely hike through the verdant countryside, have a picnic on the beach, or treat them to a breath-taking adrenaline rush as you zip line through the lush tropical forests.
At day’s end, when you’re exhausted from all the activities, you’re just a short drive from refreshing tropical drinks, sunset vistas and poolside fun back at the Villa.
Savoring Zilhuatanejo: Market Treasures and Culinary Delights
Zilhuatanejo (or as the locals call it, Zihua—“zee-wha”), is another nearby community that attracts visitors looking for a more traditional Mexican vibe. A must-see, we tell our guests, is the Mercado Municipal, the bright and colorful local market brimming with fresh produce, homemade crafts and local delicacies.
Be sure to check out the various shops and food carts. It’s our favorite way to experience what makes these small Mexican communities so unique and exciting. By the way, have fun haggling prices with the friendly street vendors—it’s a local tradition enjoyed by all and the bargains are genuine!
If you love art, you’ll enjoy the many craft shops filled with colorful textiles and clothing, intricate pottery and other artisan works. And while you’re here, don’t overlook the Museo Arqueologico de la Costa Granda, Zihua’s cultural museum that tells the story of the area’s pre-Columbian heritage and daily lives of ancient civilizations.
Finally, make time to experience the irresistible local cuisine. Zihua has many quaint restaurants where you can sample the finest Mexican seafood dishes and traditional fare. From beautifully designed beachfront restaurants to hot-off-the-grill street food, the delicious traditional flavors of Zihua are a must experience for everyone.
Pátzcuaro: Adventures in the Highlands!
If you’re looking for a bit longer trip, we can’t think of anything better than Patzcuaro, a popular destination in the highlands of Michoacan.
To begin with, the trip from Villa Milagro to Patzcuaro is an adventure all by itself. You’re going to love the mesmerizing variety of diverse Mexican landscapes as the road takes you up into the highlands.
Once you reach this charming town, put on your explorer’s hat as you discover the beauty of Lake Patzcuaro and boat out to Janitzio Island. There you can’t help but notice famous statue of Jose Maria Morelos, hero of Mexican independence, high above the community itself. Climb to the top of the statue for a panoramic view of the lake and surrounding areas.
Once you’ve done that, it’s time to wander through the narrow streets of colorful, picturesque houses. Meet the friendly locals, swap tales with the local fishermen, and immerse yourself in the island’s historic landmarks as you experience firsthand the area’s heritage-rich past.
What draws so many people here? That’s easy—people rave about the beautifully handcrafted pottery, colorful textiles and handmade items. It’s a souvenir collector’s paradise.
At lunch or dinner time, you’re in for a treat. Food lovers everywhere rave about the delicacies ranging from fresh fish dishes to traditional corundas (tamales), and more.
